A Letter to My Younger Self

Dear Freshman Sophie,

You're not so excited about your freshman year, I know, because your school doesn't allow you to actually attend the high school until you're a sophomore. While this sucks because it doesn't feel like you're starting a new point of life, you'll see how wrong that is. In fact, this year is the start for so many wonderful things.

Last year, you started doing theatre. Like, actually doing theatre, not just the two school plays you had been in in elementary and middle school. Your first three shows at Village, the local theatre, were amazing, and it'll only get better from there. It's a great feeling finally figuring out what you're passionate about, and make sure to soak it all in.

Speaking of soaking it all in, you finally rejoined choir this year after a quick hiatus to try leadership (yeah - not your thing). Little do you know, this high school choir will become your second family. You'll also get the amazing opportunity to be in a small jazz choir that meets before school. Enjoy the ride of it all.

You can't imagine it now, but all your high school dreams will come true. It sounds cheesy, I know, but by the time you graduate, you'll have gotten the lead in the school musical, traveled to places like B.C. and Disneyland for choir competitions, passed your AP classes, and received a handful of scholarships. It'll feel unreal.
And, yes, your Glee dreams will come true when your jazz choir wins first place at a competition your senior year (minus a slo-mo celebration scene and confetti, but still).

Most importantly, you will get into your dream school. You've been thinking about it since sixth grade, and you actually will. Don't doubt yourself. Ever. Keep working hard and keep your head up.

It will be hard. Oh boy, it will be hard. You'll experience heartbreak in both a relationship and a friendship. And both those things will be hard, but better things will come from them. You'll fail your first AP test, and you'll fail it badly. Pick your head up, learn from your mistakes, and you'll do better on the next ones. Just keep trucking. It will take you until your senior year to get a leading role, but keep believing in yourself.

Stop worrying about what you look like, how "good" or "talented" you are, because you are enough. It's hard to see that for awhile, but you will get there.

Most importantly, know that you can do anything you set your mind to.

I know never in your wildest dreams did you think you'd be sitting here, writing a post for your blog, performing in a show tonight, and getting ready to move out to NYU, but yes, it is real life. I'm still pinching myself, too. Never stop dreaming.

Lots of love,
